Licorice: The Surprising Health Benefits

Delicious-check! Fun and exciting-check! Health benefits-check! Licorice really just checks off all the boxes. We love licorice for countless reasons, but something that we are always eager to share is its numerous health benefits.

Licorice root is composed of hundreds of compounds, some of which have been proven to demonstrate anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral effects. For example, due to its anti-inflammatory benefits which comes from the glycyrrhizin found in the root, licorice root has been extracted to treat skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

Licorice root extract may also be beneficial for gastrointestinal purposes such as in treating acid reflux and heartburn. It has proven to stimulate mucus production and soften phlegm, which is useful in helping both bronchitis or the typical cough.

Additionally, licorice root extract has been used to reduce the severity of menopause symptoms, protect against bacteria linked to cavities, and more.

Of course, nothing should ever be taken or eaten in excess, and we are not suggesting that licorice will cure all of your ailments. Licorice in its most natural form should not be used on a medicinal level for extended periods of time. However, the small amount of licorice root in candy does not pose this risk. Those with high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma, kidney or liver disease, should limit their licorice intake.
